Entertaiment

From Old French entretenement, from entertain (to keep together, support). A clown at a kid’s birthday party, Broadway show, stadium rock concert, your friends fighting over the last potato chip: entertainment. Children’s play is a powerful form of entertainment: it mimics adult activities, such as watching performances; prepares them for responsibilities, such as child rearing and social interaction (through dolls, pets, and group games); and develops skills, like motor skills needed for sports and music. Scheherazade, a story in the professional storytelling tradition, entertained so many people that it inspired Rimsky-Korsakov, Ravel, and Pasolini to make musical and film adaptations.
