Home Improvement – What You Need to Know

Home improvement

Home improvement refers to any work done to enhance the function, comfort or beauty of a house. Home improvement projects include repairs, maintenance, and renovations such as a roof replacement or adding an addition like a deck or a fence.

Home improvements can add value to your property, making it more attractive and easier to sell if you decide to move. They can also save you money on energy costs and increase your home’s safety. However, not all projects are created equal, and it’s important to know which ones will have a good return on investment.

Many people undertake home improvement projects with the goal of increasing their home’s resale value, or at least recouping some of the cost of the renovation. This can be a costly mistake. “Not all projects boost your home’s value, and some can actually decrease it,” says Mischa Fisher, chief economist at the contractor search service Angi.

It’s essential to find a trustworthy contractor for any home improvement project. You can start by researching the Better Business Bureau or asking friends and neighbors for recommendations. Then, compare quotes from several contractors. It’s best to choose a contractor who has a license from your state’s Home Improvement Commission. Be aware that Maryland law requires all contracts for home improvement to be in writing and signed by both the consumer and the contractor before any work is performed or any money paid. In addition, the contract should have the contractor’s name, address and MHIC license number preprinted on it.
