The term “law” is derived from the Latin word lege meaning “rule”. It is a body of rules that are recognized as binding by a community or society.
Different authors define law in varying ways. The common definition is that law is a rule developed by the government or society over a particular territory and follows certain practices and customs in dealing with crime, trade, social relations, property, finance and more.
Some of these laws are made by the government, while others are based on customs and traditions that have been passed down over time. Examples include the laws that state a person cannot steal, or that murder is illegal.
According to some, the purpose of law is to secure justice for the people and ensure their basic rights. It is also believed that law should change with the time and place. It should be transparent, fair and effective.
